Networking Fundamentals
Build strong networking foundations by understanding how data moves across networks, how devices communicate, and how enterprises design, monitor, and secure networks.
Overview
This project introduces you to IT Networking Fundamentals from the ground up.
You will learn how networks work internally by exploring IP addressing, routing, DNS, switching, protocols, ports, and basic troubleshooting commands used in real enterprise environments.
Each task is designed to prepare you for:
- SOC investigations
- Network troubleshooting
- Cloud networking basics
- Security monitoring and incident response
By the end of this project, you will confidently understand how systems communicate over networks, a core skill required in cybersecurity and cloud roles.
What You'll Learn
-
Networking Fundamentals & Communication Models
Understand how data flows across networks using the OSI and TCP/IP models, and how layered communication simplifies troubleshooting.
-
IP Addressing & Subnetting Basics
Learn how devices are identified on a network, understand IPv4 addressing, subnet masks, private vs public IPs, and basic subnetting concepts.
-
Core Network Devices & Their Roles
Understand how switches, routers, firewalls, and load balancers control traffic flow in enterprise networks.
-
Common Network Protocols & Ports
Learn how protocols like TCP, UDP, HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, and SSH work and which ports they use in real-world environments.
-
DNS & Name Resolution Fundamentals
Understand how domain names are resolved to IP addresses and why DNS is critical for both networking and security.
-
DHCP & Automatic Network Configuration
Learn how systems automatically receive IP addresses, gateways, and DNS information using DHCP.
